Council Locals Go “Above and Beyond” for Local Communities

AFT Locals in the Council reach out to their local communities in different ways – outside of the usual “union business”.

Montclair State Local 1904 has been feeding MSU students during intercession (pizza parties – of course). At an event called “Putting Students First” students who remained on campus during intercession were treated to a welcome change from campus food service fare. The local used the opportunity to inform their guests of scholarship programs like the Robert G. Porter Scholarship Program and AFT’s Union Plus. Local 1904’s Community Outreach Committee has the call out for volunteers for March 15, 2014 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm to pitch in at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey in Hillside. Those interested (AFT members from other Locals are welcome of course) should email: union@mail.montclair.edu for details. Don’t forget to wear your AFT T-shirt ! Need one? Ask your local union.

Rowan Local 2373 has been publicizing their Gary J. Hunter for Excellence in Mentoring Award program for Rowan students, faculty, administrators, professional staff, etc.  The local has also been involved in local community work by sponsoring a toy drive and a food drive during the holidays.

Thomas Edison State College Local 4277 is continually involved in local community efforts, especially veterans’ causes.

Richard Stockton College Local 2275 continues their highly successful “payday parties” which feature differently-themed cuisine sponsored by the local each pay day throughout the semester.  The parties are open to all - spouses, significant others and children are always welcome in addition to faculty, adjunct faculty, librarians and professional staff.

What has your local been doing in your local community? Let us know and help us celebrate your success!
